The Nest

The Nest, a new 18-story residential tower near the North Philadelphia campus of Temple University was built to serve a mix of undergraduate, graduate, and recently graduated students. The project contains 180 rental apartments in a selection of studio, two-, and three-bedroom units. A first-floor corner commercial space and garden court engage and bring much-needed vitality to this section of North Broad Street.

CBP Architects designed the contemporary tower insertion on a once-vacant site between two well-established and historic neighbors – the Legendary Blue HorizonTM boxing venue and New Freedom Theatre. The scale of the first floor, including its height and projecting canopy, nod to similar features on the boxing venue; a brownstone cladding material references both historic neighbors while dissolving into a kaleidoscope of metal panels and window-wall components to give the building a decidedly modern feel. The Nest offers market-leading features to the university community, with multiple places for residents to socialize, exercise, study, and relax. The second floor offers a full level of interior and exterior resident amenities, including a fitness center, four separate study pods, a 24-hour technology center, two game lounges, an open lounge with fireplace and big-screen TV, and an outdoor terrace with fire pit. The project respects its historic context while offering needed residential density that caters to the needs of a 21st century population.
