Plan Philly, a publication of WHYY, featured Be a Gem Crossing by CBP Architects. The project opened earlier this month in North Philadelphia. A development of North 10 Philadelphia, Be a Gem Crossing was the organization’s first foray into affordable housing. The project aims to transform its Hunting Park neighborhood with 41 units of affordable family housing plus supportive services, ground-floor retail, and a protected outdoor play area. The CBP Architects design strategy positioned the development to reclaim a site opposite a school that once housed a nuisance hotel that brought daily chaos and crime to the community.

The Plan Philly article describes the positive feedback of residents and community members who welcome the new housing and its potential to revitalize the community. Reporter Aaron Moselle begins with the story of a resident who describes the ability to live in Be a Gem Crossing as life changing. The average income in the neighborhood is just above $30,000, or half the average for the rest of Philadelphia. All residential units are subsidized through the Housing Choice Voucher Program administered by the Philadelphia Housing Authority.

“Be a Gem Crossing is the best thing for our community in a long time,” block captain Arletha Pickens is quoted as saying.
