The Philadelphia section of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) hosted the Philaments Awards at The Franklin Institute Thursday, 11 June 2026. The Philaments program raises awareness of the lighting design profession. CBP Architects was honored to have both a project and a teammate receive awards during the event.

Architectural Intern Ryan Sharples took Second Place in the 2026 “Design With Light” student design competition. This year’s brief required entrants to develop a custom tabletop luminaire, exploring the interplay between light and materiality and its experiential impact. Sharples’ winning design, “Vicinage,” offers opportunities for soft, emerging light to capture and invite inquiry through a larger solid mass and series of reveals. The luminaire’s accentuating changes in patterns, finishes, forms, and transparency tell a story about the relationship between neighbors and how light bridges divides between spaces.

The Philadelphian lobby renovation received a Certificate of Merit during the event. CBP Architects designed a comprehensive architecture project and significant repairs to update the three-building complex’s major public spaces. Longtime collaborator, BEAM, ltd., provided lighting design for the project.
