CBP Architects Partner Eric Leighton, AIA, was recently appointed Chairperson of the Cheltenham Township Zoning Hearing Board. Cheltenham Township, Pennsylvania, is a first-ring Philadelphia suburb that just under 40,000 people call home. Residing in the township’s Elkins Park neighborhood for over 18 years, Eric has served since 2008 on the Planning Commission, Ad-Hoc Zoning Committee, and most recently as the Acting Chairperson of the Zoning Hearing Board.

“When I’m chairing a zoning hearing, listening to applicants, I have a keen awareness of their perspective. More importantly, I bring my zoning point of view to the other side of the table. I prepare presentation materials and even approach design by anticipating questions and considering what stakeholders have to say. My involvement with Cheltenham Township has improved my ability to speak publicly and read a room – or a Zoom. It also lets me give back to my community in a meaningful way.”
– Eric Leighton

Eric began his tenure with the township on its Planning Commission and over the years has had the opportunity to participate in drafting a new zoning ordinance, adopted in 2017, through a process guided by the Montgomery County Planning Commission. This replaced the antiquated zoning ordinance of 1929. The updated code addresses the nuances of increasing development pressures faced by already built-out suburbs, desiring to maintain existing character while accommodating healthy growth. Witnessing this evolution of development informs Eric’s architecture for similar communities.
